Jaguars draft WR Dede Westbrook in fourth round

One common denominator for the most successful teams the Jaguars have had: the presence of a feature back who can get it done with power and explosiveness. Fournette could be the next one. They want to alleviate some of the pressure on QB Blake Bortles — the best way to do that is to get him a workhorse like Fournette.

This is a little bit of a luxury pick for a really good defense. The Jaguars got A.J. Bouye in free agency and they already have Jalen Ramsey. Those are two great, young corners. Now, you get Awuzie, who can play the nickel spot or safety. He’s a very valuable commodity in this draft.

In the next week, Howard has an on-campus workout scheduled with the Carolina Panthers, followed by visits with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Chicago Bears, he told on Thursday. Howard had previously spoken with the Titans and Buccaneers.

Howard, who is back home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, working out with the Crimson Tide staff, has conditioned himself to be meticulously prepared in any situation. The Nick Saban school of hard knocks will do that to you.

Allen will be a popular choice for one of 30 allotted pre-draft visits afforded to each team. He made 10.5 sacks among 16 tackles for loss as a versatile and dominant presence on the Crimson Tide’s defensive line as a senior in 2016, paving the way for four national awards: the Lombardi, Nagurski, Bednarik and Hendricks.

An arthritic condition in Allen’s shoulders came to light during the NFL Scouting Combine. Allen said doctors don’t project it to be a problem for many years.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Jaguars have an in-depth understanding of his background and spoke to many at Oklahoma, who provided great insight on him.

He will compete in the slot and outside for the Jags, who see him as a high-value pick, Rapoport added. Westbrook also will likely compete on special teams, specifically on punt returns.

While the Jaguars have lured us in each of the past two offseasons, a secondary that includes Bouye and 2016 first-round pick Jalen Ramsey is a very solid foundation for new head coach Doug Marrone. The team is also expected to add former Cowboys safety Barry Church once contracts can be made official at 4 p.m. ET today.

General manager Dave Caldwell has done yeoman’s work trying to draft and develop a foundation for a roster that had none when he arrived back in 2013 but has done even more heavy lifting in free agency trying to convince top-tier players that this rendition of the Jaguars will be different. Last year, the team brought in 27-year-old Broncos tackle Malik Jackson and are in on Cardinals Pro Bowl defensive end Calais Campbell this season.

I profiled Coughlin back in 2013 for The Star-Ledger and got to look at his daily schedule. If the Jaguars believed at all that they were in need of discipline, than hiring a man who budgets time for “snack” and “coffee and walk around the locker room” should patch up any cracks in the foundation quickly.

Coughlin’s second stint in Jacksonville will be nothing short of fascinating. His reputation teetered on dictatorial during his head coaching stint with the Jaguars. He was eventually forced to soften his stance with players and coaches in New York, though that took a few years as well.
